Do You Have A Thing?

Running is the best thing that has ever happened to me. 

Completing my first marathon was the best day of my life (yes, I know "so far," mom).

It is hard work, but it's something that I love and respect more than I could ever begin to explain. Yet, after deciding to start seriously running about a year and a half ago, after hours and kilometers of training and after completing many races, running still surprises me and never ceases to amaze me. I just love it so much.

I think one of the most attractive things is to watch someone while they're talking about something they're passionate about, something that makes them TRULY happy. You can see it in their smile, their eyes, their hand gestures and posture. You can just tell how much this speaks to them and feeds their soul. You can feel their energy when they talk about it and you get super excited for them, they practically glow. I am drawn to these people. I love people who are passionate and expressive. I've seen this in Alex talking about flying, Kailey talking about Irish Dance, Lauren talking about riding horses, Corrine talking about running, Allan talking about gym/lifting/food/life, Mitchell talking about dirt biking, Janelle talking about dirt biking, Carey talking about snowboarding and woodworking, Megan talking about climbing, Tim talking about band or Apple, Alfred talking about video games, my dad talking about fishing, my mom talking about dance (or maybe my sister and I ❤️). I LOVE PEOPLE WHO HAVE A THING! (ha) YOU ALL ARE INCREDIBLE. Please tell me all the things about the things you are passionate about.

I'm also like this about food (weirdly enough) - you get me to plan a meal and I'll be glowing. 

The thing we all have in common with our things is that there's always hard parts and struggles. Bikes fall down, things break, we get injured, horses get sassy, the weather can mess with us, we lose motivation and life can definitely get in the way, but we push on because we love what we do and we continue to learn and grow every time, more so from the tough times than the good ones - cause where's the challenge in that?! 

I didn't want to run today (June 29th). I was tired, work was long, I had a million things I needed to do, I had a lot on my mind and I just DID. NOT. WANT. TO. RUN. This happens, these days happen. No matter what your thing is. After work I walked home and decided I would run anyways, even if it was just for a quick 4 km loop around my neighborhood. I didn't really want to but I felt like I needed to (training brain).


11 km. The long way around my neighborhood, up Nose Hill (I hate this hill), to the 7-11 and back. 

This is one of the best runs I have ever had!! I really felt it and loved it. I didn't run for a certain pace, it wasn't to achieve a weekly or daily goal, I just kept running. I didn't look at my watch the whole way, even when it beeped on the km to tell me my pace and I ended up getting TWO personal bests - fastest 5 km and fasted 10 km. How?! Why?! Cause I fricken love running!

5:12/km average pace. Laps of: 5:35, 5:32, 5:28, 5:58 (hill), 5:17, 5:11, 5:07, 4:39! 4:51! 4:50! 4:47!


Thank you, body and brain for loving running as much as my heart does, and for sometimes telling my lack of motivation to shove it and just do what you wanna do. 

I found out the other day that to get my BQ I have to get VERY comfortable at being uncomfortable and running at fast speeds. I need 5:05/km for 42.2 km. This is TERRIFYING and I really don't know if I can do it, but you better believe I'm going to try my hardest. 

On Saturday I'm running the High River Half-Marathon and aiming for a PR (sub 1:46). I dunno if I'll get it but again, I'm sure as hell going to try! This is what we do for the things we love and are passionate about. We TRY! We give everything we have, even when it's hard and sometimes we surprise ourselves.

Keep doing your thing. Hate it a times, swear and complain, then remember why you love it and keep going.
